Abstract

Intellectual disability in children create fears, challenges and worries to those who have contact with them, particularly the parent. It therefore requires adequate management skills when handling them. Based on this, the study investigates perceived challenges parents face in managing children with intellectual disability. Descriptive research design was used for the study. Fifty (50) parents of children with intellectual disability were purposefully selected. An instrument titled perceived challenge questionnaire was used (r=0.75). One research question was raised and one hypothesis was stated at 0.05 level of significant. Data gathered were analyzed using mean and t-test. The finding of the study revealed that the following are the challenges parents encounter when managing children with intellectual disability; financial stress, lack of social life, depression, physical exhaustion, discrimination, psychological problem and reduced quality of life. The findings also showed that there is no significant difference on perceived challenges faced by parents in managing children with intellectual disability based on gender (p>0.05). It was concluded that parents are facing many challenges when managing children with intellectual disability. Therefore, it was recommended that stakeholders should come to their aid by assisting them in any form.
